Step Saver

The step-saver was a step and time saver when it was introduced in the 1940’s.  The farmer no longer needed to walk to the milkhouse with a milk can of milk.  This cart and hopper were pulled along the barn and a plastic milk hose that encircled the unit was hung on hooks from the ceiling. When the cow was milked, the farmer stepped on the lever, the lid would open, the milk was poured into the step-saver, and with the aid of a small vacuum pump, it was taken out the bottom to the milkhouse tank through the hanging milk hose.  This saved many trips which had previously been necessary to empty milk cans into the tank.  When the milking was complete, the unit and hose were washed, sanitized, and coiled up again, ready for the next milking.
